Pole Vault Practice

Here is a compilation of our pole vault practice from the other day. We begin the year jumping from around 4-6 steps. That gives us a chance to focus on doing things correctly and not worrying about our approach. We think it teaches our kids to be aggressive through the last four steps and try to get good separation with their bottom arm. So far I think the kids are learning and getting better.

More Testing

This past week was really a good time. We put the kids through several tests and they achieved at a very high level. Below are two video's of our 600m test. Paul Mallory was the first across the line for the men in roughly 1:25 while Annie Parsley managed to cross the line first for women in roughly 1:39.

This Week in Track

This week we have taken some time to do some testing. Yesterday we tested our 30m fly, Standing Triple Jump and ran a timed 150m dash. I was pleased with how every one tested. We test the standing triple to see if our kids are acquiring the body awareness skills that we teach. The timed 150m should give me a good idea of how their sprint fitness is progressing. Check out the video's below.

Chili Pepper Fesitval!

Recently we attended the Chili Pepper festival that the University of Arkansas hosts each year. This past year there were more than sixty men and womens teams to compete against. I say that mainly to place our top fifteen finishes in context. To continue in that vein, many of the teams that we raced against were Division 1, including but not limited to top rated Oklahoma State, the Univerisity of Arkansas and Indiana University.  That being said, our men and women ran great! I would say more but I think the following video sums it up pretty well. Looks like championship season is going to be a lot of fun........

600m Testing Results

We had excellent weather this past week. We also had a great round of testing. It's been roughly four weeks since we began fall track and things have only gotten better with time. The kids got a chance to relax this week and find out where their fitness was. We tested standing long jump, standing triple jump, a football throw and also a timed 600m run.

I had originally hoped that we would have a few athletes around 1:30 for the men's 600m. I was hoping that we would have some girls run around 1:45 as well for the same distance. Boy was I surprised when we had five men run under 1:30 and four girls run under 1:45. To clarify the fastest time clocked by a male was 1:23 by Adou Omot and 1:40 for the women by freshman Anne Parsely. Talk about some athletes! Below are the videos of our testing.

To put this into context, last year we had two men break 1:30 when we tested late in October and not a single female under 1:45 last year. Looks like its going to be a great year!

d2cross mentions Augie

Its always good to get press.  I was catching up on some of my reading and came across this article in the d2cross blog. If you aren't a follower of this blog you should be. He does a great job of covering the important races in d2 and provides interesting insight.

Augustana Service Project - Sioux Falls Marathon Water Stop

Each year we get up early on a Sunday morning and head down to the falls to hand out water to thirsty runners. This year we chose a 80's theme and every one of the kids came decked out in style. I shot some video and threw it together so you could get an idea of what we do at the waterstop.

Augie Men win Griak, Women fifth!

I had a chance to catch up with some of the kids following their races this past weekend. Every one was genuinely excited about how things went. I can't help but look forward to the rest of the year. Both the men and the women have a ton of potential.

Week Three Poll Released!

We had a pretty good week with cross country. The men ran well as a group and came away team champions at the Roy Griak Invitational in Minneapolis. The women ran without many of our top women and took fifth as a team. Both teams will race again in Vermillion this weekend and again on October 16th in Fayetville, AR.

Coaches Corner

This is one of our new segments. We managed to put one of these together last year right near the end of the year and now we would like to do a quick wrap up  when new things happen around here. Coach Hellman takes some time and talks about what's happening and what will be happening with the cross country team. Enjoy!

Water Stop and Meet of Champions

Each year at Augustana we do a waterstop at the Sioux Falls Half Marathon. This year the race was extended to a full marathon. We were there again, this year with an 80's theme. I shot some footage and took a few pictures while I was there. I'll be compiling and editing the footage today and posting the video tonight. We won the award for best waterstop for the fifth year in a row. That means that this next sunday we will be enjoy a free pizza dinner at Red Rossa. Our kids really enjoy getting out and doing things in the community and it gives us a chance to get some exposure as a team.

We also hosted the meet of champions the day prior out at the polo grounds. We had over twenty teams participate and while the course was a bit muddy everything else went great. Our kids worked to help sell t-shirts, park cars, drive pace vehicles and make the day run as smoothly as possible. It was a good time of team building and without our athletes we wouldn't be able to do what we do.

Remembering 2009-2010

Last year was a great year. I put together some quick footage today that highlights just some of the things that happened. There is no order, just a fun video to expose some of our athletes to the public. Next up, a video from cross nationals last year!

September Testing!

Each year I find it prudent to test the abilities of my athletes. This helps me to monitor their progress throughout the fall track season. During the course of the season we have weekly races that allow me to see if they are improving. These tests allow both myself and the athletes a chance to see where they are. Additionally the athletes get a chance to compete against one another.

The most important aspect of this testing, in my mind, is feedback. Below I have supplied charts that show how each athlete fared compared with last year. Keep in mind that last year we tested after four weeks of track practice had passed. This year we are testing immediately. Our testing will be limited to the Standing Long Jump (SLJ), Flying 30m Dash, 30m from 3pt and Over Head Backward shot toss (OHB.)

TC-System.jpgWe have a new timing system this year and I am looking forward to setting it up today and putting it through its paces. Our timing system allows us to automatically time each athlete up to the thousandth of a second. Furthermore we are able to quickly and efficiently time athlete after athlete.

Cross Country Pre Season Interviews

I had a chance, recently, to sit down with some of our athletes and talk with them about last season and their expectations for this coming season. Below are their interviews. Please feel free to share these with friends and family. As the year progresses I will be taking the time to interview more and more of our athletes. My goal is to enable you to get an inside view of just what happens here. Go Vikings!

Cross Country Camp Videos

I finally had a chance to get to some video uploaded from our recent trips to the black hills. Please enjoy. Next I'll be adding some interviews with athletes from the team. Look forward to that. Track starts in a week. I'll be posting some video from our testing that we will be doing the first week. I'll be shooting some video from practice and from our high school cross country meet this coming weekend. We will also be hosting a water stop at the Sioux Falls Marathon. Look for video to be posted of that some time next week.

Welcome to the Black Hills

Day one has begun. We got up this  morning, ate some great breakfast and headed into Hill City to do an easy recovery run. Below I've compiled a nice video of some of our warm up. I also sat down with some of our kids when we got back to the cabin and did some interviews. I have four that I will post this afternoon after I get a chance to edit the video and find a place with a fast enough connection to upload them! Lucky for me I'm able to tether my phone to my laptop so that I can work on the road. Look for videos and pictures to come soon! Back to School

In just a week we will be back in school. On Tuesday we will be headed to the Black Hills for cross country camp. I plan to figure out how to post pictures here directly from my phone. Another thing that we are doing this year is a facebook profile. This will allow me to share video and pictures from track meets more easily with the kids on our team and recruits. It will also allow parents a way to access more video and pictures of their athletes.

This summer we have been working pretty hard.  I'm very excited to see how that work pays off. This is truly going to be an exciting year at Augustana. We have some other things in the works that I'll share later on this week. Lets just say that I'm pretty excited about them and that its a big win for our program.........

Summer Time

So what do Augustana Track athletes do during the summer? Great question. This summer our kids are trying to get stronger. Well just how strong you might ask? Consider the below video. This is one of our jumpers/hurdlers. She is squatting 405x4 at the very end of a set of 8-6-4-4 with weights at 340-360-380-405. She could get lower, I am however interested more so in the fact that she can move the weight! I'll be contacting all our recruits for this coming year soon to encourage them to lift. I hope our men will be able to squat in the high 500's by the time school starts back up!

On a side note I found this video dealing with some of the workouts that we do. I'm a big fan of the things that Dan Pfaff does. A direct result of that this year will be the progressive addition of some of the things included in this video.

Another video to consider when looking at how we lift.

augietrack.com!

In an effort to make it easier to find more information about Augustana track and field I've purchased the domain augietrack.com What does that mean for you? It means you have a much shorter name to remember. It also means that you can share our website with friends easier. Try it, take some time today to tell some one else you know or work with to visit augietrack.com. I guarantee they'll be able to find us. It's basically a sister site to our www.recruitMEaugie.com website where recruits can fill out their information for us. We've had a great year so far. As of today we have ten (10) qualifiers for the national meet. Just off hand I think that may be the most that we've ever had at one national meet. Some one correct me if I'm wrong.

We got some press after this weekend. This is a direct quote from the d2cross blog.

At Wisconsin-La Crosse, two Northern Sun athletes recorded only the third and fourth 800 auto qualifying times. Previously unknown Aduo Omot (Augustana, S.D.) nipped indoor champ Denise Mokaya (Mankato State), as both got under 1:50. Dan Allen (St. Cloud State) and Brian Werner (Augustana) also ran fast enough to book a trip to Charlotte. Awesome race.

And to think you have the opportunity to watch the race on the blog here! Visit the blog to read the whole article. He does a great job of covering distance racing at the d2 level across the board as well. http://d2cross.blogspot.com/2010/05/last-chance-meet-of-week-uwl-eagle-open.html

New Qualifiers!

Cecilie Udstuen and Caitlin Polgreen both moved up on the national lists with great performances at the Winona Twilight. Cecilie ran 2:11.09 to move to 9th on the list and Polgreen moved up to 12th on the national list with a 4:31.59.

Automatic and Provisional Qualifiers

We are back on the road headed this time to Winona, MN for one of two last chance meets today, the other being at USF in Sioux Falls. We are stopping for some Starbucks and as we pause in our trip I can't help but mull over what we have accomplished this year as a program. This has been a phenomenal year so far. Thats what we thought prior to this weekend. Then our athletes traveled to Wisconsin La Crosse and North Central College just outside Chicago. After yesterday we had an even longer list of automatic and provisional  qualifiers. Consult the list below.

Women - 2 Auto/11 Provo (13 national qualifiers)
Womens National List
Molly Clark - 3k Steeple/10k - 10:45/36:21.64 - Automatic Qualifier and provisional qualifier
Kyle Blakeslee - 3k Steeple/5k - 10:43/17:15.58 - Automatic Qualifier and provisional qualifier
Cecilie Udstuen - 800m/1500m - 2:13.15/4:37.30 - 2x provisional qualifier
Caitlin Polgreen - 1500m - 4:33.22 - provisional qualifier
Linn Nilsson - 1500m - 4:33.29 - provisional qualifier
Runa Falch - 5k/10k - 17:11.87/36:16.26 - 2x provisional qualifier
Miriam Hovda - 10k/3k Steeple - 36:26.25/11:16.64 - 2x provisional qualifier
Noel Bentle - Hammer - 171'10" - provisional qualifier

Men - 3 Auto/3 Provo (6 national qualifiers)
Mens National List
Diego Oquendo - 110mh - 14.62 - provisional qualifier
Odou Omot - 800m - 1:49.46 - Automatic Qualifier
Brian Werner - 800m - 1:51.88 - provisional qualifier
Tom Karbo - 3k Steeple - 8:54.79 - Automatic Qualifier
Travis Beniak - 3k Steeple - 9.04.97 - Automatic Qualifier
Dan Black  - 3k Steeple - 9:09.04 - provisional qualifier

Total - 5 Auto/14 Provo (19 national qualifiers)

In closing. I think the best part about this list is the position of the athletes who have provisionally qualified. The girls in the 1500m should get in, Brian Werner in the 800m should get in as well. It speaks volumes about our program that we have this many kids running this fast at this time of year.  What a great time to be a Viking!

Wisconsin LaCrosse and North Central

What a great night for Augustana track and field. First and foremost both Adou Omot and Brian Werner had huge pr's. Adou crossed the line in 1:49.46 which places him 2nd on the national list. Werner crossed in 1:51 which is his fastest clocking ever. Both times put them in position to gain entry to the national meet.

In addition to those performances Cecilie Udstuen ran 2:13 in the 800m for her best time this season. Noel Bentele threw a personal best of 171-10 in the hammer to move up to 16th on the national list.

At the North Central meet just outside of Chicago both Travis Beniak and Dan Black posted personal bests. Beniak ran 9:04 and Black ran 9:09. Beniaks time is an automatic qualifier for the national meet while Dan's time places him 17th on the national list with a provisional mark.

North Central College - Naperville, IL
The steeple will go off at 9:50 central time this evening. Temps should be in the high 50's and the wind should be around 5 mph from the west. Perfect conditions. Both Dan and Travis are seeking to set new personal bests under 9:10 in the steeple.

Believe it or not I am currently writing as we cruise down the interstate on our way to Chicago. Internet access has been spotty at best but as we near the eastern side of Minnesota I seem to be getting better service. As we were driving we got talking about the history of our program. I am a history buff so knowing about our program is very interesting to me. I jumped on the internet archive looking for two things. One was chasingtradtion.com which no longer is on the internet. The other was to look at the Augustana athletic web site back in the day. Posted below is the 1997 team outlook along with a link. I'll be posting updates from the road complete with race video and re-caps. This is the last weekend to qualify for nationals. Check back soon for more details.

1997 Augustana Track and Field Web Site

Season Outlook

The 1997 season sees a youth movement on the Vikings team. Although there were only two graduating seniors in 1996, 1997 sees eleven true freshman, and one redshirt freshman on the Augie squad. Gone from last years team are Tom Dow (12-time All-American, 800m; Council Bluffs, IA), and Jason Knudsen (400/800; Custer, SD).
Returning veterans inlude North Central Conference placewinners, Johnny Parks (Sr; Rapid City, SD) in the 1500m, Kyle Anderson (Sr; Scholfield, WI), Matt Merritt (So; Sioux Falls, SD), in the hurdles,Troy O'Hara (So; Sioux Falls, SD) in the 3000m Steeplechase, and three of the four members of the 4 x 400m relay, Merritt, Chris Fischer (So; Yankton, SD), and Joey Gleason (So; Nicollet, MN).
Joining the veterans is an impressive class of freshman. The Viking sprinters have been bolstered by the addition of Jacob Conway (Fr; Waseca, MN), Jay Eilers (Fr; Spearfish, SD), and Chris Norris (Fr; Pleasant Valley, IA). All three were leading sprinters and state place winners in their respective states. The outlook is good for the Vikings to have a lot of depth from 100m to 400m, with a strong group of sprinters pushing each other for positions on the sprint relays.
In addition to the sprints, Norris joins Merritt in the hurdle events, along with Brian Rehnke (Fr; Bloomington, MN), Adam DeCook (Fr; Byron, MN), and Seth Norris (Fr; Estherville, IA). The coaching staff is excited about this large group of talented individuals who provide the team with the most hurdle depth in a number of years.
The hurdles are not the only area where Rehnke excels. The Minnesota State Meet runner-up (6' 8") in the high jump, gives the Vikings strong point scoring potential in the jumps. Gleason and Matt Witt (Fr; Grand Island, NE) give the Vikings firepower in the horizontal jumps, with the possibility of Rehnke joining them in the triple jump.
The distance corp could also be a strong area for the Vikings. Senior Parks is looking stronger than ever in cross-country, and looks to improve on his 4th place finish in the NCC meet 1500m. O'Hara had a tremendous freshman season, breaking the school record in the 3000m Steeplechase, and looks to be one of the the leaders in the North Central Conference in 1997. Duane Bowman (Jr; Rhame, ND) is enjoying a strong cross-country season, and will be among the leaders in the 5000m and 10,000m. Joining the upper classman is a talented group of freshmen.
